The Times, in collaboration with a business group, analyzed the spending and points ratio of the Premier League teams last season, with Liverpool first and Manchester United last.

United were expected to finish third on 77 points but ended up sixth on 58, the worst gap of any team in the Premier League, according to the table, which is based on wages and transfer spending. Ahead of them are Everton and Watford, who are 16 points apart from their expectations.

At the top of this list, Liverpool, based on their spending analysis, were expected to score 74 points last season but got 92. Liverpool are followed by Tottenham Hotspur (14 points), Brentford (11) and West Ham (10).
